Broodingly Sophisticated Interiors: The Look Book
treniqblog | September 4, 2019

For a few seasons now, white and neutral interiors have been a design industry favourite. We have been mesmerised by bright Scandinavian design and the purity and openness it brings forth with clean finishes and the minimal effect. But lately, designers seems to be dipping their brushes into darker, inkier hues and we are starting to see some bold colours do the rounds, suggesting a real change in the air.

There is something enigmatic and sophisticated in shadowy, moody hues. They give a room a deep and sophisticated feel, reminding us of Winters and the rain, when you just want to pull out a dusty book from the shelves and curl up with a warm cup of tea and a cozy blanket.

If you are ready to step into the dark side,  here’s how you can add some drama.

The Not-All-That-Moody Moody

This is the easiest way to bring home the theme without overdoing it. Uncertainties lurk everywhere and we understand that you might be walking on eggshells around this trend. What if it’s too dark and suddenly from a home you have what resembles a dungeon. Start off with one significant change like your wall colour. There are plenty of ways to brighten up dark walls as you can see in the room below. The bright pink carpet adds a pop of colour to the whole room, while the white sofa neutralises the effect. The leathers and animal print add oodles of drama, while the floral cushions make it cosy and warm. All in all, this look is what an initiation into the dark world should look like.

The Almost-Black Greys

There is something so hauntingly beautiful about blacks and greys when paired together. These two hues simply belong together. The distressed wall is a gorgeous midway between the darker and lighter shades. The grey armchair and rug, simply belong with the dominant blacks. And in the midst of it ll the wooden sideboard is a breath of fresh air.

Bedazzled Blacks

Bold enough to be dreaming about an all black look but worried about how it might turn out? We feel you! Here is a gloriously dark room oozing with drama, mystery, elegance and sophistication! The plain black of the walls receive respite in the form of the panelling and engravings. The slide through bar cabinet is lit in the warmest hue of yellow to bejewel this wall space. It really helps that there is natural sunlight streaming through a massive window, while the copper pendant lamp does the rest.

The Perfect Balance

All black or no black are only two options. Why settle for either when you can work midway? This living room is a fine example of just enough dark interiors. While the heroes of the room are in darker hues, the non-dark knick knacks make up for enough and more balance. We love the way the mirrors intercept the black walls and the white rug adds a level of required colour blocking. The greens, sikvers, coppers and whites are all a fine accessory to enhance the darker numbers in this room.
