Materials and surfaces play a significant role in the experience we have with our surroundings, they need to be practical yet still inspiring. In the hospitality sector the surfaces must exude luxe whilst still maintaining the necessary hard wearing qualities for high footfall areas. The education sector again must incorporate hard working surfaces with an environment that inspires learning. Surface Design Show 2017 will highlight the unique needs of these sectors as this year’s Surface Spotlight.
Surface Design Show returns 7-9 February 2017 to London’s Business Design Centre with almost limitless design possibilities to architects and designers who are looking for the best in surface design for the hospitality and education sector.
There is also a packed programme of events, with many of the seminars focusing on surfaces within the hospitality and education sector including ‘Inspiring Hospitality Design’ where Una Barak, Scott Brownrigg and Martin Hulbert of MHD will discuss their favourite – and least favourite – surface designs, selected from hotel and restaurant interiors around the world.
Surface Spotlight Live debuted in 2016, Trend & design writer Sally Angharad will once again be curating Surface Spotlight Live 2017, which consists of a regular Surface Spotlight Newsletter and an ‘at show’ feature and presentation showcasing the most innovative materials for Education & Hospitality spaces before they hit the market.
Exhibitors with materials specially designed for the hospitality and education sectors include:
CD UK (Stand 210) will be displaying Corian – perfect for the education sector and tells a colourful tale in the new ‘Learning Garden’ at Windmill Primary School. A key feature of the space, is an array of colourful posts and blocks made from DuPont Corian hi-tech surfaces and engraved with lettering to suggest the spines of books in a library.
Cellecta (Stand 252) have installed HEXATHERM XFLOOR 500 into Bournemouth Art University Accommodation. Similarly ScreedBoard 20 was installed in the prestigious University of Oxford student accommodation development providing minimal sound intrusion and under floor heating.
Grestec Tiles (Stand 596) industrial glass wall tiles are complete with a mix of metal and craquele texture effects to form innovative, industrial style wall panels that can be utilised to create an extraordinary effect for hospitality interiors.
Spectral (Stand LS360) provided an energy efficient lighting scheme for University of Hertfordshire’s labs to offer a fantastic quality of light so the students can complete their work and the right aesthetic which the university found appealing.
Nora (Stand 240) rubber floor coverings are ideal for schools as the durability means chairs and tables do not cause any damage to the robust covering.
Factorylux lighting recently brought the first cycle café to life by combining a café, bicycle workshop, a bar, and exhibition space. The busy space required complex and conflicting lighting to keep up with the film screenings, live cycle sport and even cyclist speed dating. Factorylux will be holding workshops in their mobile space at Surface Design Show 17.
BAL (Stand 616) provide innovative fixing technology for fail-safe external tiling on balconies, roof terraces and patios for high-end luxury developments such as hospitality. BAL’s technology helps to provide seamless transitions from inside to outdoors, creating usable outside areas all year round.
