There are so many different greys to consider when decorating – from dark moody greys to very pale Scandi-style greys, to warm greys. But one of our favourites has to be a steel grey – not too dark and not too warm, it’s a grey for all seasons and for all rooms. Some may be worried that, especially during the winter season, it can be cold and difficult to create a cosy environment, but we’ve found some examples of how this beautiful colour can be warmed up.
In this country dining room, Fawn Interiors Studio chose a steel grey as the perfect neutral backdrop for the white marble table and the large photography art prints on the wall. The room was then warmed up with oak frames on the artwork, tan leather chairs, and a rich rosewood sideboard.
In this converted schoolhouse on My Domaine, the steel grey walls play perfectly into the industrial vibe but we love how they have warmed up the whole scheme with that gorgeous bright orange. And as their mood takes them, they could easily swap out the orange for another colour, from yellow to dark red, and dramatically change the mood of the room.
The steel grey units, in this kitchen by deVOL, perfectly suit the Shaker kitchen and give them a modern twist. The colour of the units also sits harmoniously alongside the stainless steel range cooker and, as a great example of stunning attention to detail, they have beautifully echoed the brass on the cooker with the brass handles on the units.
The designers of this living room, featured on The LuxPad, have used steel grey in a really interesting way…in a wallpaper pattern on one feature wall. The expanse of wallpaper is broken by the clean white chimney breast, which is another lovely feature. They have then highlighted the grey tones in their choice of sofas, adding lots of metallics and hot colours to make the space feel cosy as well.
So don’t be afraid of steel grey…it may sound like a cold, un-cosy colour but, when used with interesting accessories, it’s the perfect choice for your modern interior.
